WHAT ARE A FRAME GANTRY CRANES?

As the name suggests, this crane has an ‘A’ shape when viewed from a side elevation. An A Frame Gantry, otherwise commonly known as a portable gantry crane, is used for lifting light to medium weight loads.

The standard Safe Working Load (SWL) include 125kg, 250kg, 500kg, 1000kg, 2000kg, 3200kg and 5000kg. Bespoke A frame gantries can also be designed and manufactured to suit applications outside of this scope.

Gantry Structure

The structure of this type of gantry cranes comprises of a horizontal main beam and two supports, which are often mounted on wheels to mobilise the crane and allow for easy movement. Runway beams are available in standard sizes from 2m to 8m in length. Portable gantries are usually made from steel or aluminium, but food grade gantry cranes are manufactured in 316 stainless steel.

Fixed or Portable?

Depending on what the crane is used for, you can opt for either a fixed gantry crane or a portable gantry. The fixed A frame crane is great for applications which require a large safe working load, as their lack of mobility brings increased ability to carry heavy loads. A mobile gantry, on the other hand, comes on wheels – allowing you to re-locate the crane at your preference.

Castor Combinations

They can be provided with an assortment of castor combinations and levelling elements to suit the application. There are two versions of moveable A frames available – one is designed to be moved with a load, and the other is only to be moved when unloaded.

Depending on the application, an A frame gantry is usually supplied with one of the following hoisting devices:

• Manual chain block
• Electric chain hoist
• Pneumatic chain hoist
• Bespoke lifting system

WHAT OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE ON GANTRY CRANES

A frame cranes can be manufactured from mild steel, aluminium and stainless steel (food grade A frame cranes). Aluminium A frame cranes are usually foldable / demountable so they can be stored away when not in use. All gantry cranes are available with the following:

• Levelling jacks / feet for levelling the runway beam
• End plates / end stops
• Electrical isolator and festoon feed system / bus bar
• Indoor or outdoor use
• Towing point
